However, if you really want to make money blogging, you need a self-hosted WordPress blog – a blog you own and completely control.
With so many bloggers eventually migrating from Blogger to WordPress, we decided to put together a step-by-step guide on how to transfer your Blogger blog to WordPress without losing your content, traffic, search engine rankings, or email subscribers.
Moving From Blogger To WordPress
The steps to move Blogger to WordPress are simple and easy. The WordPress team has already developed a free tool to automatically transfer your posts, images and comments from a Blogger account into a WordPress blog.
First, you must come up with a blog name and create the new WordPress blog to which you will move your content (i.e. posts, comments, images, etc.).
For step-by-step instructions on setting one up, check out our “Start A WordPress Blog Guide” to get a free domain and affordable web hosting. For the smoothest and most reliable way to install WordPress, we recommend you use BlueHost.
After you’ve set up your new WordPress blog, you can start the process of moving your Blogger blog to WordPress. Follow these instructions:
After logging into your new WordPress blog, in the Admin area, go to Tools > Import.
Click “Blogger” and press “Install Now” in the bottom right corner.
Now click “Activate Plugin & Run Importer“.
On the next page, you must click “Authorize” to allow access to your Blogger/Google account.
Be sure to choose “Allow Access” to grant WordPress permission.
Once you authorize access, a list of your Blogger blogs will appear. On the right side, click “Import” next to the Blogger blog you want to transfer to WordPress.
When the import has completed, you will have the option to assign your Blogger posts to a specific WordPress account by clicking “Set Authors“, thereby attributing authorship to that name.
If you’ve only created one WordPress author and account, then the default attribution will work. Otherwise, at the Author Mapping page, choose the appropriate author name and click “Save Changes“.
Congratulations, you’ve successfully migrated your blog from Blogger to WordPress.
Now we need to install a WordPress plugin to tell Blogger where your new blog is located.
This plugin will redirect visitors from your old Blogger blog to your new self-hosted WordPress blog, and therefore help you keep all your previous blog’s visitors, search engine rankings, and email subscribers.
Go to Plugin > Add New and search for “Blogger To WordPress” in the search box. When you find it, click “Install Now“.
After installation is complete, click “Activate Plugin“.
Then you will need to go to Tools > Blogger To WordPress Redirection, and click the “Start Configuration” button”, as seen below.
Next to the Blogger blog you just imported into WordPress, there will be a “Get Code” button. Click it.
You will come to a page with code. Copy all the generated code.
In your Blogger Dashboard, click on “Template” in your menu options and choose to “Edit HTML” on the current theme you are using.
Select all of the text in the HTML Editor (CTRL + A) and paste the code you copied in the previous step. If the new code looks similar to the example below, click “Save Template“.
Go back to WordPress and click the “Verify Configuration” button under the code area.
Finally, after the redirection has been set, a test link will be provided. Click on the link to test that the redirect has been successful and that you are transferred from your Blogger blog to your new WordPress blog.
For example, your Blogger homepage should redirect to your WordPress homepage, and all corresponding blog posts should work.
You are now ready to start building and growing your WordPress blog!
